Great Cormorant - many seen on an afternoon boat trip near Tainan.

Gray Heron - Scattered locations in wet lowland areas.

Great Egret - Scattered locations in wet lowland areas.

Intermediate Egret - Scattered locations in wet lowland areas.

Little Egret - By far the most common egret, seen on nearly all bodies of water.

Striated Heron - 1 in the river at Taroko Gorge.

Black-crowned Night-Heron - Very common in lowland bodies of water.

Malayan Night-Heron - 3 in the Taipei Botanical Gardens, 1 at TESRI.

Yellow Bittern - 2 at a marsh in Tainan, 1 at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

Sacred Ibis - 1 at Kuan Tu Wetlands near Taipei.

Black-faced Spoonbill - Flock of 500+ at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Eurasian Wigeon - Several at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

Eurasian Teal - Several at the Tainan Fish Ponds and on the river near Taipei.

Mallard - A couple on an afternoon boat trip near Tainan.

Spot-billed Duck - Several seen in flight at the Kuan Tu Wetlands near Taipei.

Northern Pintail - Several at the Kuan Tu Wetlands near Taipei.

Garganey - Several at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

Northern Shoveler - Seen at the Tainan Fish Ponds and on the river near Taipei.

Osprey - A couple seen on an afternoon boat trip near Tainan.

Oriental Honey-Buzzard - A couple seen singly in flight at higher elevations.

Crested Goshawk - Seen in several places, only one seen perched (at Taroko Gorge).

Eurasian Kestrel - 1 at Taipei airport, 1 at Tainan Fish Ponds, 2 at Wu Ling Pass.

Peregrine Falcon - 2 at Alishan National Park.

Blue-breasted Quail - A small flock seen in some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

Taiwan Partridge - Heard only near Yu Shan National Park.

Swinhoe's Pheasant - 1 female at Tzuei Fung.

Mikado Pheasant - 1 male at Tzuei Fung.

Ring-necked Pheasant - 1 flushed from some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

White-breasted Waterhen - 1 flushed from some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

Common Moorhen - Fairly common on lowland bodies of water.

Eurasian Oystercatcher - 1 at the Tseng Wen Esturary, apparently about the 6th record for Taiwan.

Black-winged Stilt - Small groups at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

Pied Avocet - Several at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

Pacific Golden-Plover - Several at the Tainan Fish Ponds and the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Black-bellied Plover - Several at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Little Ringed Plover - Several at the Tainan Fish Ponds, a couple in a muddy farm field near Shin Cheng.

Snowy Plover - Many at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

Mongolian Plover - A couple at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Greater Sandplover - A couple at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Bar-tailed Godwit - A couple at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Dunlin - Very common at the Tainan Fish Ponds and the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Saunders' Gull - 1 at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Caspian Tern - A few at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Rock Dove - Commonly seen in almost all urban areas at all elevations.

Ashy Wood-Pigeon - Seen on 2 different days at higher elevations.

Oriental Turtle-Dove - Fairly common from low to high elevations, also in urban areas.

Red Collared-Dove - Fairly common in lowland urban areas.

Spotted Dove - Common in lowland urban areas.

Lesser Coucal - 1 flushed from some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

Mountain Scops-Owl - Heard only at Chi Tou Forest Research Station.

Collared Owlet - Heard only at Alishan National Park.

Brown Hawk-Owl - A couple heard and one briefly seen silhouetted at Tzuei Fung.

Silver-backed Needletail - A couple seen in flight at Taroko Gorge.

House Swift - Seen at several lowland locations, urban areas.

Common Kingfisher - Several at scattered lowland bodies of water.

Black-browed Barbet - Seen at the Chiang Kai-chek Memorial, TESRI, and Wu Ling Pass.

Gray-capped Pygmy-Woodpecker - A couple seen at TESRI, single birds heard elsewhere in the lowlands.

White-backed Woodpecker - A couple seen at Tzuei Fung.

Oriental Skylark - A small group seen in some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

Plain Martin - Seen in several lowland locations.

Barn Swallow - A few at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

Pacific Swallow - The most common swallow, widespread in open areas.

Striated Swallow - Seen in a few locations at different elevations.

Asian House Martin - Concentrations seen at several roadside stops at higher elevations.

Black-backed Wagtail - Fairly common, seen on most days.

Yellow Wagtail - Seen in several lowland locations.

Gray Wagtail - Fairly common, especially near water.

Olive-backed Pipit - A couple small flocks seen in fragmented mountain forests.

Yellow-browed Warbler - A couple seen and heard in urban parks near Taipei.

Rufous-faced Warbler - Fairly common at mid- to high-elevation forests, often with Gray-cheeked Fulvettas.

Snowy-browed Flycatcher - Several heard, one male seen at Chi Tou Forest Research Station.

Vivid Niltava - Seen a a couple roadside stops in mid-elevation forests.

Red-flanked Bluetail - A couple at Alishan National Park.

Collared Bush-Robin - Common at Alishan National Park, seen a couple other places at high elevations.

Plumbeous Water Redstart - Common on mountain streams.

Little Forktail - Single birds in 3 different places on mountain streams.

Black-naped Monarch - Several seen at TESRI and other low- to mid-elevation areas.

Steere's Liocichla - The most common endemic species, seen at most mid- to high-elevation areas.

Spot-breasted Scimitar-Babbler - 2 at a roadside stop outside Yu Shan National Park.

Streak-breasted Scimitar-Babbler - A couple at a roadside stop below Alishan National Park.

Pygmy Wren-Babbler - Heard in several places at higher elevations, 1 seen well at Alishan National Park.

Rufous-capped Babbler - Uncommon to common at higher elevations, often in mixed species flocks.

Taiwan Barwing - Uncommon at higher elevation forests.

Streak-throated Fulvetta - Uncommon at higher elevations.

Dusky Fulvetta - One flock seen at Chi Tou Forest Research Station.

Gray-cheeked Fulvetta - Common in flocks at higher elevations.

White-eared Sibia - Fairly common at higher elevations, often with mixed species flocks.

Taiwan Yuhina - Common in noisy flocks at higher elevations.

White-bellied Yuhina - Seen at 2 different locations at mid- to high-elevation forests.

Vinous-throated Parrotbill - Several seen at some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

Black-throated Tit - Common in flocks at higher elevations.

Coal Tit - Several seen in mixed species flocks at Alishan National Park.

Green-backed Tit - Common in mixed species flocks at mid- to high-elevation forests.

Taiwan Tit - A couple seen at a roadside stop en route to Taroko Gorge.

Eurasian Nuthatch - A couple seen at Tzuei Fung.

Fire-breasted Flowerpecker - Several at high elevations, seen perched at Tzuei Fung.

Japanese Whiteye - Very common in urban areas, also seen in forests but not at high elevations.

Brown Shrike - Fairly common in open areas at lower elevations.

Long-tailed Shrike - 1 seen at some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

Black Drongo - Fairly common in open areas at lower elevations, often on power lines.

Bronzed Drongo - Uncommon at higher elevations, seen at Chi Tou Forest Research Station.

Eurasian Jay - Several seen at Chi Tou Forest Research Station and Tzuei Fung.

Formosan Blue Magpie - 8 at a park outside Taipei.

Gray Treepie - A couple seen in lowland areas, urban areas with trees.

Eurasian Magpie - Common in Tainan, seen in other urban areas.

Eurasian Nutcracker - Several were at Alishan National Park.

Large-billed Crow - Fairly common, not seen at low elevations.

Common Myna - A few near the river in Taipei. Introduced to Taiwan.

White-vented Myna - A few at some farm fields near Shin Cheng. Introduced to Taiwan.

Crested Myna - Fairly common in urban areas. Native to Taiwan.

Asian Glossy Starling - A small group seen at the Chiang Kai-chek Memorial in Taipei.

White-cheeked Starling - 1 at the Tainan Fish Ponds.

White-rumped Munia - Seen on a couple different days feeding on seeds at low- to mid-elevation areas.

Scaly-breasted Munia - Fairly common in open areas at lower elevations.

Brambling - A group of 5 birds was at Yu Shan National Park.

Vinaceous Rosefinch - Several, including 2 males, were at Wu Ling Pass.

Brown Bullfinch - Several at mid-elevation sites, sometimes in small flocks.

Russet Sparrow - A pair was at a small village in the mountains below Alishan National Park.

Eurasian Tree Sparrow - Common in all urban areas at low elevations.

Birds I missed that others saw on this trip:

Chinese Bamboo-Partridge - 1 was heard by John and Nathan at a small village below Alishan National Park.

Barred Buttonquail - Tom and Graham saw one or two at some farm fields near Shin Cheng.

Gray-headed Woodpecker - A couple were heard in upper elevation forests.

Far Eastern Curlew - A bird that might have been this species was at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Little Tern - 1 was seen by others at the Tseng Wen Estuary.

Cattle Egret - Several were in agricultural fields in lowland areas.

Japanese Paradise-Flycatcher - Graham saw birds at Yu Shan National Park and Taroko Gorge.

White-browed Bush-Robin - Ted and John Wu saw a pair at Tzuie Fung.

White-tailed Robin - Jonathan saw one at Yushan National Park fly across the road.

Zitting Cisticola - Ted found a small flock in Taipei on our last day.

Brownish-flanked Bush-Warbler - Jonathan heard one at Yu Shan National Park.

White-headed Munia - Ted found one with a flock of Scaly-breasted Munias in Taipei on our last day.

Black-faced Bunting - Seen by everyone on the trip except me, birds were at several locations.
